Long term modeling projects
The first long term project I hope to finish in my lifetime is one a/c from each squadron that comprises Carrier Air wing One (CVW-1) from the USS America. I got a chance to visit the America during Fleet Week in New York City in 1989, & the idea's been in my head ever since.
CVW-1 consits of VF-33 "Star Fighters", VF-102 "Diamondbacks" flying the B model, VFA-82 "Marauders", VFA-86 "Sidewinders", flying the F/A-18, VA-85 "Buckeyes" in the A-6, VAQ-137 "Rooks", operating the EA-6B, VS-32 "Maulers", the S-3 squadron, the "Dragon Slayers" of HS-11, flying the SH-3H, & finally the "Screwtops" of VAW-123, the E-2C unit.
I have almost all of the kits needed for this project. The two F-14's, two F/A-18's, & the SH-3H are the excellent Hasegawa kits. The A-6E & the EA-6B are the Revell & Monogram kits respectivley. The S-3B is the AMT kit. As of this writing, there is no 1/48th scale injection moled E-2C kit out there, so I'll have to be patient.
I'm in decent shape decal wise. The VF-33 decals will come from a variety of sources, since the exact scheme I want to do is not available on a decal sheet. Superscale did the VF-102, VS-32, VA-85, & the VAQ-137 decals. Both F/A-18C units are from Aeromaster Decals. The HS-11 decals will come from a variety of soures also, with some of the decals being handcut from decal stock.
My second long term project is to do all of the Century series fighters. I want to do at least one model of each type (F-100, F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, & the F-111). I'll do the sub-vareints on a case by case basis. If there is a significant visual change to the a/c, like going from a single seater to a dual seater, or change in mission (Wild Weasels), then those will definately get built.
I am also a Phantom Phreak. I plan on biulding at least one of each major USAF/USAF/USMC version of this a/c, so thats 11 right there (B,RF-4B, C, RF-4C, D, hard wing E, slatted wing E, G, J, N, & S.
Swing wings are my thing aslo, & I have 12 F-14 models (Monogram/Hasegawa mix) I'd like to do other than the 2 aformentioned VF-33 & 102 a/c. I'm going for a broad cross section of the F-14 from the early gull over white scheme (VF-14, -24, -211), the overall gull gray (VF-202), the various incarnations of the 3-tone TPS (VF-201),the D model Tomcat (VF-31) & some that I like just for the markings (VF-111 "Miss Molly", VF-31 D model CAG, VF-201 CAG, & VF-21 "OOK ACK, Baby").
Another favoite a/c of mine to model is the F-8 Crusader. With real life being stranger than fiction, I work on the same airfield where all these a/c were built, so add another 12 models to the list (A, RF-8A, B, C, D, E, F, RF-8G, H, J, K, L).
Lastly, I want to build one B-1 from each squadron (9th, 13th, & 28th Bomb Squadron) assigned to the 7th Bomb Wing, from Dyess AFB. All of those a/c are in the overall gunship gray scheme with the exhaust nozzle turkey feathers removed, so that means I'll have to do one more in the three-tone gray/green strategic camoflauge scheme, with the turkey feathers in place.
